Yuvan Shankar Raja is a popular music director in Tamil cinema, who has produced some chartbusting peppy music. Being the eldest son of famous music director, Isaignani Ilayaraja, it’s quite evident that he has acquired all the musical genes from his father. Yuvan, as his fans call him, has composed for more than 100 films in his 15 year career in the music industry.
His first movie album was Thulluvatho Ilamai, starring Dhanush and directed by Kasthuri Raja gave him a huge break in the music industry. The unique genre, chartbusting dance numbers and the deeply haunting lyrics gave him his much needed boost in the industry. Interestingly all his movie collaboration with Dhanush and Selvaraghavan have been major blockbusters . At some point of time, he was one of the most sought after directors, next only to A.R.Rahman and his own dad. Unfortunately , his brother, Karthikraja could never grab the limelight like the way Yuvan did
In his 100 film career, he ensured that only his musician skills alone carried him and never exerted his dad’s huge influence to get an opportunity to compose movies. That alone can speak volumes about his musical prowess and skills. Rahman, being impressed with Yuvan , even offered his recording studio for sometime to compose his music.
He has won two FilmFare awards, one of which was for Best Music Director, for the famous hit movie, 7G Rainbow colony and received further 6 nominations in the music category
His biggest hit movies include : 7G Rainbow colony, Thulluvatho Elamai, Mounam Pesiyadhe, Arindhum Ariyaamalum,, Manadhai Thirudi Vittai and of course Chennai 600028
If 7G Rainbow colony was about a youth’s struggle with life, love, relationships and the society overall, Chennai 600028 was exactly the opposite. It was all about celebrating friendship, the usual fights and enjoying life as it comes. The stark contrast in music in these two movies, composed by Yuvan was very evident.
7/G Rainbow colony songs had a melancholous, hallucinating and deep realization effect whenever you listen to them. Ninaithu Ninaithu Paarthal , sung by Shreya Goshal can really move anyone and bring tears. Idhu Porkalama and Kan Pesum Varthaigal on the other hand brought out the struggles faced by the youth and the pressures society puts on them. All 3 of them remained in the top 10 hits for a long time since its release
Chennai 600028 was a classic definition of Peppy music by Yuvan Shankar Raja. The dance number , Saroja Saman Nikalo was a massive hit amongst everybody and called for repeated listening. The other similar track was “Jalsa” which called for a celebratory mood among the youth
Some of his other notable compositions include : “Variya” from Pudhupettai, “Vilayadu Mankatha” from Mankatha, Loosu Penn from Vallavan and Idhu Varai from the movie Goa
